16th Century Coaching Inn.

The Inn for All Seasons is a handsome 16th century coaching inn situated beside the A40 near Burford. Burford is recognised as the gateway to the Cotswolds and the inn makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area.

Whatever your plans; a long stay to discover the beauty of the Cotswolds? A romantic weekend? A well-deserved break from the nine-to-five? A meeting or conference that needs to run like clockwork? Or perhaps you are planning a family get together, special occasion or Christmas in the Cotswolds? We can promise you the warm welcome and service you would expect from a privately-run country Inn.

Inn for All Seasons provides every modern convenience for today’s discerning guest, while retaining much of the character and style of a traditional Cotswolds stage coach inn. We offer 12 comfortable, en-suite letting bedrooms, exposed beams, flagstone floors, Cotswold stone walls, large fireplaces and beautiful gardens all situated in the heart of the Cotswolds.

History

The original part of the Inn, now the bar area, was built in the 1500’s and started out as quarry cottages, housing quarry men and their families employed by the Barrington Estate in the quarrying of Cotswold stone. Some of the Cotswold stone quarried from the seam of stone that ran through the forest to the rear of the Inn’s larger beer garden even made it’s way into London’s iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral and several of the Oxford University colleges’ ‘dreaming spires’.

With the arrival of the highway in the 1700’s, the building became a coaching inn and was later further extended to accommodate stage coach passengers and other travellers en-route between London, Oxford, the west country and Wales. All of the main arterial roads extending from London to other parts of the country had Stage Coach Inns mostly every seven miles along their routes (seven miles was then a long rickety journey by stage coach!). A Stage Coach had to be able to provide drink, food and accommodation for weary travellers and be able to provide a fresh change of horses for Stage Coaches.  The Inn’s current Coach House dates from the 1870s is to the east side of the main building; it has now been converted into comfortable guest accommodation.

During the stage coach era, the Inn was known as ‘The New Inn’ and provided an essential stopping point for horses, horse-drawn carriages, Stage Coaches and, more recently, the motor car.

In the early 1960’s the Barrington Estate sold The New Inn to Jeremy Taylor (a Horse Master who had worked on many iconic 1960’s films including Lawrence of Arabia, The Winter’s Tale and A Man for All Seasons) who, in homage to his film career, renamed The New Inn to the ‘Inn for All Seasons’ in the late 1960’s.

The Inn remains largely unchanged from it’s early origins whilst having, more recently, been sympathetically updated to provide all necessary the conveniences sought by the modern day traveller.

The Inn is currently owned and run by the Hillier family who graciously offer all guests a very warm Cotswolds welcome.
